The Patriot is a compact sport utility vehicle featuring classic Jeep styling in an affordable package. While it will spend most of its life on city streets, the Patriot includes components that provide it with off-road capability unparalleled by other vehicles in its class.

The Patriot shares its small-SUV platform with the Jeep Compass, but provides off-road capability that its sibling does not. The Patriot is offered in either front-wheel drive, or with a four-wheel drive system that features a "lock" mode to enhance traction during inclement weather. Two trim levels are available: Sport and Latitude. Front-wheel drive Patriot models are powered by a 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, while 4-wheel drive models use a 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (optional on the FWD). Available transmissions include a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Trim-dependent standard equipment includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated front seats, air conditioning, cruise control, satellite radio and power mirrors, windows and door locks. An available Freedom Drive II Off-Road package enhances the Patriot's capabilities with a four-wheel drive off-road mode, hill descent control, all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks and a brake lock differential. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control with roll mitigation, traction control, and six airbags.

The Jeep Patriot carries over unchanged for 2017.

Quick Quotes
Off-road is where the Patriot separates itself from the rest of the compact-crossover set. Its capability was a pleasant surprise...It still isn't as good off-road as the Liberty or Wrangler, but it does justify the company's Trail Rated designation.

The Patriot's real problem, however, is that it's up against a number of more appealing compact crossovers. While it's true that a properly equipped 2011 Jeep Patriot is more capable on a rugged trail than other comparably priced small SUVs, it pales in comparison to fully committed off-roaders like the Nissan Xterra, Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep's own Wrangler.

Full Review

The 2017 Jeep Patriot might be dated, but it still offers good value. It's a far better vehicle than the original Patriot. It might not be equipped as well as some of its rivals, but it's a sensible package with real Jeep character and enough civility to be a good family vehicle.

The Patriot compares with mainstream crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, or Toyota RAV4, and smaller models like the Subaru Crosstrek, Nissan Juke, or Mazda CX-5.

It doesn't look much like the Jeep Compass, which Jeep markets as a more premium model, but beneath its sheetmetal the Patriot is basically the same, with a lower price and available stripped-down.

The Patriot will be redesigned for 2018, so for 2017 it's unchanged.Base engine is a 2.0-liter four cylinder making 158 horsepower and using a standard 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).This engine only comes with front-wheel drive, which sort of defeats the purpose of a Jeep.If that's all you want, there are better crossovers.

The other engine is a 2.4-liter four cylinder making 172 hp with that 5-speed gearbox or a 6-speed automatic. It comes with all-wheel drive.

The Patriot performs well in some crash tests, but scores a Poor rating from the IIHS in the small-overlap frontal crash test.

The 2.0-liter engine with 5-speed gearbox and front-wheel drive delivers an EPA rating of 23/30 miles per gallon City/Highway, or 26 mpg Combined. With the 2.4 liter, 6-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, mileage drops to 20/26/22 miles per gallon City/Highway/Combined.
